Saint Martin's Day, November 11, is regarded as the day when the transformation of grape juice into wine is completed, and the newly-produced wine is ready for tasting.
It was a big celebration during the middle ages in Europe, as shown in a painting by 16th-century Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel titled “
The Wine of St. Martin’s Day”. It shows a crowd drinking the first wine of the season, and some of them suffering its consequences. A reminder for us to drink responsibly :-)
There is a St Martin's Day wine revival in the Czech Republic where the new vintage wine will go to shops only on November 11, and the new wine year will be welcomed at many celebrations.
This year, St Martin's day is a very special day for us. 11-11-'11 a unique date, and we are looking forward to tasting the wine from our very first full growing season. On top of that, we also get to taste the wine that we harvested last year on 10-10-'10!! Can it get any better than this?
